Experts converge in Lisbon to discuss EU law’s impact on portuguese music rights

On May 14th, a panel of legal and industry experts gathered at the office of Abreu Advogados in Lisbon to discuss the impact of EU law on music creators’ rights in Portugal. This debate was part of an ongoing, in-depth investigation conducted by Fair MusE project researchers across 10 European Union countries.

Focusing on the nuances of the Portuguese context following the transposition of EU Directive 2014/26 on Collective Rights Management and EU Directive 2019/790 on Copyright in the Digital Single Market, the discussion featured Prof. Giuseppe Mazziotti (Fair MusE, Principal Investigator and Coordinator) and Laura Matos (Fair MusE, Research Associate). They were joined by Miguel Carretas (Audiogest, General Director), Eduardo Simões (GDA – Gestão dos Direitos dos Artistas, Legal Department Director), David Serras Pereira (Unison Rights, Licensing and International Manager), and expert lawyers from Abreu Advogados (Luís Barreto Xavier, Ricardo Henriques, Manuel Durães Rocha, and Margarida Castillo Silva).

Together, they engaged in a productive exchange of perspectives on how Portugal can enhance its framework to ensure fairer remuneration for right-holders in the music industry.
