Fair MusE at EPIP 2025: Transparency, cooperation, and fairness in music licensing
Antwerp, Belgium

Prof. Giuseppe Mazziotti, Principal Investigator and Coordinator of Fair MusE, will speak at the 20th Annual Conference of the European Policy for Intellectual Property (EPIP) Association, taking place from 10 to 12 September 2025 at the University of Antwerp.

Recognised as one of the leading academic conferences on intellectual property, science, and innovation, EPIP 2025 will explore the theme “Turning IP Ambitions into Action: Creating Connections, Collaborations, and Communities.” The event serves as a key platform for advancing dialogue between research, policy, and practice in shaping the future of IP governance.

Prof. Mazziotti will contribute to Parallel Session E.3 – IP & Data Governance (II) with a presentation titled “Bridging the Data Divide: Enhancing Transparency and Cooperation in Music Licensing for Fairer Remuneration.” His intervention will draw on Fair MusE’s research on music copyright licensing, music creators’ rights, and the discussions within a multi-stakeholder Task Force currently developing a proposal for a new ‘Music Copyright Infrastructure’.

The presentation will spotlight the systemic obstacles in European music licensing, such as the limited interoperability and sharing of music data and metadata, the uneven implementation of EU licensing standards in collective rights management, and the legal and technical complexities involved in balancing rights across sound recordings, musical compositions and performances .

Prof. Mazziotti will also present policy recommendations aimed at improving cooperation among stakeholders, enhancing data transparency, and strengthening fair remuneration mechanisms for music creators.
