Fair MusE in Brazil: contributing to international debates on digital competition and creators’ rights
Fair MusE’s research is crossing continents. As debates on AI, platform governance, and creators’ rights intensify worldwide, Prof. Giuseppe Mazziotti will represent the project at major events across Brazil, ensuring that the project's findings help shape international thinking on transparency, competition, and fairness in digital music markets.
Fair MusE’s Principal Investigator and Coordinator, Prof. Giuseppe Mazziotti, will take part in a series of high-level events in Brazil between 27 November and 5 December 2025. All these events will provide invaluable opportunities to disseminate Fair MusE’s research and to bring it into international discussions on competition across digital platforms, AI governance, and the evolving landscape of creators’ rights. Together, these engagements position Fair MusE within a broader international dialogue on the impact of digital technologies on authorship, the economic and cultural value of professional creativity and the digital media across which creators disseminate and earn from their works.
AI, competition, and digital markets: BRICS+ Digital Competition Forum 2025
On 27–28 November, Prof. Mazziotti will participate in the 4th BRICS+ Digital Competition Forum in Rio de Janeiro, co-organised by the International BRICS Competition Law and Policy Centre, FGV Law School, and the Brazilian competition authority CADE, with the support of the UNCTAD Research Partnership Platform.
He will participate as a provocateur in the session “AI Competitive Advantage” on 28 November, which will examine how AI providers consolidate market power by capturing value from user-generated data, content, and labour. The discussion will focus on the implications of such value appropriation for entry barriers, competition dynamics, and the adequacy of current legal frameworks. Contributions from leading academics, antitrust experts, competition officials, and representatives of the BRICS+ competition authorities will enrich the debate on digital markets and the challenges of AI-driven ecosystems.
Creators’ rights and platform governance: FGV Rio law lecture
On 4 December, Prof. Mazziotti will speak at FGV Rio Law as part of the Reg Talks, a lecture series that brings international scholars to discuss current issues in law and regulation. His session, moderated by Nicolo Zingales (FGV Rio Law) with Allan Rocha de Souza (UFRJ) as discussant, will address “The Evolution of EU Creators’ Rights in a Platform-Dominated and Data-Driven Music Economy.”
The lecture will examine how platform governance, data asymmetries, and algorithmic systems are reshaping the position of creators within the EU music market, drawing on research findings from Fair MusE’s Work Package 2. The event is open to FGV’s undergraduate and graduate students and will offer an opportunity to exchange perspectives with the academic community in Rio.
Towards a fairer music ecosystem: OAB/RJ exchange
Finally, on 5 December, Prof. Mazziotti will give a talk at the Bar Association of Rio de Janeiro (OAB/RJ), titled “Fair MusE’s White Paper: A More Transparent, Competitive, and Sustainable Online Music Ecosystem in Europe.”
Organised by the Commission on Information Technology and Communication, the talk will introduce the key themes and forthcoming policy recommendations of Fair MusE’s White Paper – covering transparency, equitable data governance, competitive market structures, and the need for regulatory reforms to improve fairness and sustainability of music streaming ecosystems.
