Can online music platforms be fair? An interdisciplinary research manifesto
Fiesole (FI), Italy

The event, organised by the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, Centre for a Digital Society (CDS), is grounded in a research manifesto co-authored by Giuseppe Mazziotti (Catolica Global School of Law) and Heritiana Ranaivoson (VUB). It proposes an innovative interdisciplinary approach to address the limitations of exclusively doctrinal and scientifically isolated analyses of EU cultural and industrial policies in today’s platform- and algorithm-driven economy.

In this talk, Professor Mazziotti will explain why it is  important to rely upon different fields of expertise and different types of theoretical and empirical research to check if recent EU policy changes in copyright law and regulations like the Digital Services Act and the Digital Markets Act can be suitable instruments to address the dominance of major online services  in today’s fast-changing digital economy.

The research manifesto stems from the Fair MusE proposal on the European music sector, addressing challenges posed by the rapid growth of social media and music streaming services, along with the escalating influence of their algorithms and data infrastructures .
