Exploring the “Value Gap”: Fair MusE at the Copyright Society’s 2025 International Conference
Dublin, Ireland

Fair MusE will contribute to the debate on platform liability and fair remuneration at the 2025 International Conference of the Copyright Society, taking place at the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin on 20–21 October. The 2025 International Conference will gather leading scholars and practitioners from Europe and the United States to discuss how copyright can evolve in a rapidly changing digital environment, from AI-generated content to cross-border enforcement and new business models in the creative industries.

On October 20, Giuseppe Mazziotti, Principal Investigator and Coordinator of Fair MusE, will join the panel “Article 17: Has the ‘Value Gap’ Closed? Or the Internet Killed Off?”, moderated by Adam Rendle (Taylor Wessing), and featuring Sophie Goossens (Latham & Watkins), Dr. Bernd Justin Jütte (University College Dublin), and John Phelan (ICMP).Together, the panelists will assess the real-world impact of Article 17 of the EU Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market (DSM Directive) – one of the most debated legislative reforms in copyright law in recent years. Six years after its adoption, the panel will examine whether the reform has effectively rebalanced the relationship between creators, right holders, and online platforms, and what lessons might be relevant for US copyright policy.

Founded over 70 years ago, the Copyright Society is among the world’s leading forums for research and dialogue on copyright law and policy. Its conferences bring together leading academics, practitioners, and representatives from the creative industries, as well as members of the US Copyright Office and the US Patent and Trademark Office. Through its conferences and publications, the Society has long served as a bridge between scholarship and practice in the field of intellectual property. This year’s edition stands out for its transatlantic scope, fostering a unique dialogue between academia, law, and the cultural and digital sectors on how copyright can evolve in a rapidly changing online environment.

Professor Mazziotti’s participation places Fair MusE at the heart of a global conversation on platform liability, fair remuneration, and the sustainability of digital value chains. These topics are directly aligned with the project’s research on the governance of music streaming, the implementation of Article 17, and the search for fairer mechanisms of revenue allocation in the digital music ecosystem. His contribution will bring the project’s findings into conversation with international experts, strengthening the link between academic research, policy development, and industry practice.
