Fair MusE at “Copyright in the spotlight” conference in Athens: Prof. Giuseppe Mazziotti to discuss digital music licensing
Athens, Greece

On 7 March 2025, Prof. Giuseppe Mazziotti, coordinator of Fair MusE, will participate in the “Copyright in the spotlight” international conference, hosted at the Acropolis Museum in Athens. Organised by the Hellenic Copyright Organisation (Ministry of Culture of Greece), the event will offer a platform for legal experts, policymakers, and industry representatives to exchange views on the most pressing challenges and recent developments influencing the future of copyright regulation.

Prof. Mazziotti will present in Session 3: “Current challenges in collective management”, where he will deliver an intervention titled “Digital music licensing in Europe: collective and individual management in data-driven markets for recording and publishing rights.” His presentation will explore how the rise of data-driven business models, attention markets and algorithm-dominated music services are reshaping the management of publishing and sound recording rights in Europe. The discussion will highlight the evolving role of collective management organisations (CMOs) and the emergence of new specialised actors whose purely for-profit character is leading towards individual licensing models, with a significant impact on fairness and transparency in the distribution of revenues to music creators.

The session, chaired by Prof. Konstantinos Christodoulou (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens), will also feature contributions from leading copyright scholars, including Frantzeska Papadopoulou (Stockholm University), Sofie Grettve von Rosen (Swedish Patent and Registration Office), and Bernt Hugenholtz (University of Amsterdam, Institute for Information Law).

The conference will conclude with a roundtable discussion on “Copyright and collective management in the age of AI,” featuring representatives from major copyright management organisations, including GESAC, SAA, IFRRO, and AEPO-ARTIS. This discussion will address the implications of AI on copyright enforcement and revenue distribution for creators.

With the music industry undergoing profound transformations, this conference provides an essential forum for debating how copyright law can adapt to new realities. Fair MusE’s participation will contribute to advancing the dialogue on data transparency, fairness, and the future of creators’ rights in Europe.
